The Road Less Traveled by, Again

A favorite of mine, and of many, by Robert Frost (1874-1963).  The odd thing about it is that, while the story seems to describe a one-time event, it is really something that occurs over and over again ... at least it has seemed that way to me.
Way leads on to way ... always.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Oaths -- Civilian and Military

Department of the Army Oath of Office for Civilian Personnel --
I [state your name], will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.  So help me God."
Armed Forces Oath of Enlistment, except the National Guard (Army or Air) --
I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
Observation --  There is nothing in the civilian's oath about obeying the orders of officers.

Headline: National Debt Rises by $3 Million Each Minute

Fast-forwarding to the 2012 presidential debates, I can almost see the Republican nominee, just days before his eventual landslide victory, make his closing argument asking, "Are you better off that you were four minutes ago?"

On the Value of History

General Martin Dempsey
"He advised students to become students of history since many of the challenges that will face them are not new but are "variations on the theme."

---Army Chief of Staff, General Martin Dempsey in his August 18 address to the students at the Army War College.
